| Breaking News | | Friday, August 9th, 2013: Elvin Did a No-No! No-Hit Grizzlies! Excitement reigned at the ballyard today as Tomsk hurler Bill Elvin tossed a baseball rarity -- a no-hitter.
After whitewashing the Gateway Grizzlies at Field of the KGB 3-0 he was swamped by reporters in the clubhouse for postgame comments. "I'm just glad to be here. I want to help the club any way I can. Today I just went right at the Gateway as hard as I could, as long as I could."
Elvin chalked up 5 strikeouts and allowed 1 walk in his superb performance.
The Tomsk manager had his own analysis of the ballgame: "I don't think we could have hit him with a howitzer today."
When asked for a comment on how this might bolster the club's race for the pennant, the Tomsk manager said, "We're going to take the season one game at a time, guys."
This season Elvin has compiled a 2-1 record with a 1.93 ERA. | | Monday, July 1st, 2013: Red-Hot Smith Scorches KGB What a day for Rob Smith of the Pittsburgh Blitz! A 5-hit hitting spree! That doesn't happen everyday! He ripped Tomsk pitching apart at Blitz Ballpark and sparked the Blitz to a 11-1 victory. He wrote his name in the record books, finishing up his special day 5-5.
"I'm usually a first ball hitter," Smith told SION reporters in the postgame press conference. "I think pitchers think batters are going to let the first one go by. I never do. I've always found that it's better to pull the trigger early in the count. Pitchers get real nasty when they get ahead of you, so I try to avoid that."
R. Smith singled in the 1st, tripled in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, hit an RBI double in the 6th and hit a solo-shot off L. Bancroft in the 8th.
| | Monday, July 1st, 2013: Smith Hits for the Cycle by the Numbers "Ladies and gentlemen, Rob Smith has just hit for the cycle!"
That was the call from the PA announcer as Smith collected the last hit he needed to complete the cycle today against the KGB.
He collected 5 hits in 5 at-bats, 2 runs batted in and 2 runs scored as Pittsburgh stopped Tomsk 11-1 at Blitz Ballpark.
Hitting for the cycle is one of the most difficult feats in baseball at any level. The odds are really against a player hitting a single, double, triple and a home run in the same game.
"It's the last thing on my mind really. I'm out there trying to get a blooper or a walk or whatever might help the team. Hitting for the cycle is probably as much about luck as about skill," Smith told reporters after the game.
He may be right, but it's not every day that someone hits for the cycle. That's why his name will be placed in the record book.
R. Smith singled in the 1st, tripled in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, hit an RBI double in the 6th and hit a solo-shot off L. Bancroft in the 8th.
