Fernando Morín of the San Diego Anchormen was on top of his game today. He tantalized the Melbourne Admirals with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest and came away with a 5-0 shutout.
In the postgame comments, the Melbourne skipper said, "He had the changeup working. You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The San Diego hurler had 6 strikeouts, gave up 1 walk and surrendered 4 hits in his complete-game effort.
Morín told reporters after the game, "To be successful in this league, you have to keep the ball down. If you don't, they'll make you pay."
This year Morín has compiled a 12-11 record with a 2.72 ERA in 27 starts.

 | Thursday, August 7th, 2014: Hits Galore: Grimard Drills 5 Hits
All game long San Diego's Ivan Grimard was rattling the walls at Anchormen Ballpark and banging out base hits against the Hartford Whalers. When the dust finally settled on the diamond, he had a 5-hit day and the Anchormen had a 7-6 victory.
Speaking with reporters after his standout performance, the 22-year-old left fielder said, "Get 5 hits, win a ballgame, it's nice. I could get used to this."
I. Grimard tripled in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th, grounded out in the 8th and hit an RBI double in the 11th.
In 2014, Grimard is hitting .367 with 1 home run and 3 RBIs in 7 games played. He also boasts an OBP of .387 with 1 walk and 6 runs scored.

Felipe Mendoza burst onto the Western League stage in a big way last week. This promising rookie left fielder for San Diego garnered everyone's respect by putting up some remarkable numbers and picking up the Player of the Week trophy.
The 24-year-old haunted opposing pitchers hitting .579 (11-19) with 2 home runs and 10 RBIs last week.
Thus far this year Mendoza is hitting .301 with 9 home runs, 49 RBIs and 45 runs scored.
