There was little doubt around the Eastern League that Juan Perlta would be awarded Pitcher of the Month honors for July. Today, they made it official, naming the 22-year-old Syracuse Spartans starter the latest honoree.
He thoroughly dominated the hitters who stood in against him, holding them to a .243 batting average while fashioning a 1.85 ERA in 5 starts. His record for the month was 5-0 in 39 innings of work.
So far this year Perlta has a 7-4 record with a 3.30 ERA. |

Port-au-Prince pitcher Ted Belcher put on a show today and walked away with a 1-0 shutout victory over the Syracuse Spartans, throttling them on 4 hits. He just cruised through their lineup, fanning 11 and walking 1 in a strong outing.
"He was very efficient and he hit his spots," his manager said. "He stayed down in the zone and stayed away from the middle of the plate."
In 22 starts this season Belcher has fashioned a 7-10 record and a 4.14 ERA.

Michael Phillips really did a number on the Bishops in the Syracuse 12-6 victory. Not just anyone can get 5 hits in 6 at-bats. But Michael Phillips did just that today for the Spartans and gave his batting average a healthy boost and sparked his club in the win.
"I felt real good in the batter's box today. I had confidence in my swing and knew that it was there and that I could get the job done," the 26-year-old shortstop said after his record-setting performance.
M. Phillips singled in the 1st, flied out in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 6th, singled in the 8th and hit a three-run home run off J. Unknown in the 9th.
This year Phillips is hitting at a .256 pace with 4 home runs and 21 RBIs. He has played in 71 games and scored 29 times.
