For those clubs fortunate enough to make the post-season, the baseball season is just beginning. But for the majority of players and teams, today is the first day of a long off-season. Clubs in the playoffs have begun preparation for their upcoming showdowns to determine the 2013 GUBA Single A champions. The best teams will go at it "tooth and nail" for the Round 3 crown and it all gets started in just a few days. | | Friday, August 9th, 2013: Bailey Goes 5-5 It's not something you read in the sports pages everyday -- a 5-for-5 day. It may only come around once in a career -- a lot of players never have one -- but Marty Bailey got one today. He scattered hits all over Brewmasters Ballpark to pace Rochester to a 14-4 victory over Cartagena.
The Cartagena skipper told reporters in the press room, "Tip your hat to him. He hit some good pitches. According to the scouting report, Bailey hit several that he is not supposed to hit."
M. Bailey walked in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, hit an RBI double in the 6th, hit a two-run triple in the 7th and singled in the 9th.
This year Bailey is hitting .329 with 8 home runs. | | Thursday, August 8th, 2013: 5-Hit Barrage by Checchinato Battista Checchinato told the press after his 5-hit day, "Every batter wants to have a quality at-bat every time he steps up to the plate. He wants to hit the ball hard."
Well, that's just what Checchinato of the Petaluma Atheists did against the Glendale Gladiators. He went to the plate 5 times and 5 times he delivered base hits, much to the chagrin of the Gladiators, who suffered a 14-1 defeat.
"Not much that I can say," offered the losing manager, "he just hammered the heck out of us."
B. Checchinato hit an RBI single in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 6th and singled in the 8th.
Thus far in 2013 Checchinato has hit .281 with 2 home runs, 45 RBIs and scored 59 runs. | | | | | Yesterday's Games | | Eastern League | | Away Team | Home Team | Result | Time | Winning Pitcher | Losing Pitcher | | Tasmanian | Saskatoon | 6-5 | 7:05 pm | R.Rivera (3-3, 5.78 ERA) | W.Wolfe (0-1, 3.52 ERA) | | Hong Kong | Omaha | 0-4 | 7:05 pm | M.Johnston (9-7, 3.83 ERA) | J.Palma (2-2, 3.86 ERA) | | Madagascar | Ponce | 16-10 | 7:05 pm | K.Edmonds (5-5, 4.83 ERA) | E.Foster (7-5, 6.41 ERA) | | Sendai | Bensenville | 3-4 | 2:05 pm | P.Erickson (5-1, 4.37 ERA) | J.Unknown (0-0, 0.00 ERA) | | Killarney | Kieice | 1-5 | 2:05 pm | M.Ortíz (14-3, 2.56 ERA) | N.Ito (7-13, 4.44 ERA) | | Knoxville | Campeche | 16-1 | 7:05 pm | J.Torres (3-1, 1.80 ERA) | K.Pak (2-2, 3.74 ERA) | | Alaska | Hagerstown | 1-3 | 7:05 pm | R.Bell (8-11, 4.05 ERA) | A.Sosa (4-1, 2.65 ERA) | | Reno | Santa Monica | 2-6 | 7:05 pm | É.Rolland (1-1, 4.10 ERA) | P.Campos (6-5, 4.72 ERA) | | Long Island | Andean | 3-4 | 7:05 pm | J.García (2-1, 3.24 ERA) | J.Unknown (0-0, 0.00 ERA) | | Western League | | Away Team | Home Team | Result | Time | Winning Pitcher | Losing Pitcher | | Delaware | Boston | 0-3 | 7:05 pm | M.Frayes (11-12, 4.56 ERA) | P.Parker (3-9, 4.44 ERA) | | Travelers Rest | Waverly | 2-7 | 7:05 pm | A.Tovar (6-4, 4.22 ERA) | E.Ramírez (0-11, 4.32 ERA) | | West Ohahu | Langley | 0-4 | 7:05 pm | H.Zeng (9-4, 3.10 ERA) | A.Hawkins (4-5, 4.91 ERA) | | San Jose | Taipei | 11-1 | 7:05 pm | D.Robinson (7-13, 4.31 ERA) | T.Miller (9-10, 4.17 ERA) | | Chattanooga | Kiev | 3-4 | 7:05 pm | E.Johnson (3-1, 5.01 ERA) | D.Chojecki (1-1, 7.46 ERA) | | Lyon | Holbrook | 3-8 | 7:05 pm | Á.Ávila (10-7, 4.02 ERA) | A.Chávez (10-5, 3.32 ERA) | | Aunu'u | Davao | 6-2 | 7:05 pm | H.De Los Santos (5-8, 5.50 ERA) | J.Unknown (0-0, 0.00 ERA) | | Rochester | Cartagena | 2-3 | 7:05 pm | H.Cranworth (8-5, 5.45 ERA) | G.Blevins (2-4, 2.79 ERA) | | Petaluma | Glendale | 1-0 | 2:05 pm | R.García (4-9, 2.89 ERA) | A.Apolinrio (3-3, 3.67 ERA) | | |
